Located in one of the country’s richest agricultural plains, Chengdu is a capital city of Sichuan Province. With over 2300 years of history, Cehngdu is renowned for its fertile land and agricultural wealth that have earned the city a nickname “Storehouse of Heaven”.
Chengdu has been famous for its rich cultural heritages. Within its jurisdiction, Qionglai City, Chongzhou City and Pengzhou City are listed as Cities of Rich Cultural and Historical Heritage by the government of Sichuan Province. Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Mt. Qingcheng (the Taoist Mountain) were ranked as Cities of the World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in Nov. 2000.
The city provides the tourist with a number of convenient shopping opportunities, offering a wide range of Chinese and Tibet-style "souvenir items" from traditional Chengdu (Shu) brocades and embroidery to art objects and Tibetan-style and more traditional Chinese ornaments and souvenirs. Brocades, usually silk brocades, are one of the most popular "souvenir items" among tourists, as they are not only quintessentially Chinese, but also have high intrinsic value. The age-old brocade style developed over the aeons in the Chengdu area is the Shu brocade style. The Shu brocade style is one of the four justly famous brocade styles of China, the other three being Hunan, Cantonese and Shu brocade styles.
