Together with Xian, Kaifeng, Nanjing, Beijing and Hangzhou, Luoyang is one of the six major ancient capitals in Chinese history. Located in western Henan Province, Luoyang was set up as a city 4,000 years ago and served as the capital of nine dynasties. From the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Luoyang developed into an important economic and cultural center, not only for China, but also for all of Asia. The well known Yangshao Culture Remains which was found in the Yangshao Village in the northwest of Luoyang could be traced back to 6000 years ago. It was the eastern terminus of the ancient Silk Road as well.
Luoyang is not only one of China’s ancient capitals, but also one of the famous historical cities in the world. There are large numbers of cultural relics and historical sites in the city. Among the most notable are the Longmen Grottoes, a world Cultural Heritage site and one of China’s four major treasure of grotto art, and the Baima (White Horse) Monastery, the first Buddhist shrine built in China. In addition, the city is the home of peony, the national flower of China.
