Known as “Gusu City” in the ancient times, Suzhou was first founded in 514 BC. Praised as “Paradise on the Earth”, Suzhou is famous for her elegant and ingenious gardens which embody the harmonious principles of Chinese garden construction to create a microcosm of the universe in a confined space. The Grand Canal, built during Sui Dynasty, continues to feed an enormous network of small canals that penetrate every part of the city. Streets are built along rivers, buildings stand by water. Bridges, waterways and houses dominate the vistas of Suzhou, making it "Venice of the East". Suzhou is also famous for her delicious food, silk and embroidery.
